  2. Angela Went (Angelique Custom Creations)

On entering Angela’s jewelry studio, immediately, one’s senses are brought alive with the elegant lighting in the studio, the pastel colours of peaches, blues, purples and white which accentuates unique pieces of jewelry displayed on the neck forms. This superb setting was created by Caribbean Fashion Designer Rykii de Jude to portray the exquisite works of Ms. Angela Went.

Angela is the Manager and Jewelry Designer for Angelique Custom Creations. Her interest in jewellery came about after seeing some designs on the internet which piqued her interest and she began to explore the option of jewellery making and ventured into production in 1999. She specializes in stylish pieces such as beaded necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings which are made from copper, silver, gem stones and the natural elements of the Caribbean. The main line produced by her company is Makossa, which features classic earth tone hues. Angela is also a teacher.

Angela’s unique ability in jewelry design is supported by her management skills. She has a Bachelor of Science in Public Sector Management and a Diploma in Jewelry Arts from the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco. Angela states that her experience allows her to monitor the market, be proactive in decision-making and understand the process of diversification in a challenging business environment. In addition, on evenings she transforms her manufacturing space into a training space where classes are offered in wire jewellery, chain weaving and working with polymer clay. She is very keen on sharing her knowledge with other entrepreneurs.

Angela’s source of inspiration are etched in the words of Moses to the Israelites “See the Lord has chosen Bezalel…….and has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze…….he has given him the ability to teach others…..all of them master craftsmen and designers.”

The designs of Angelique Custom Creations have been showcased at the Caribbean Gift and Craft Show in Barbados, St. Kitts and Curacao, the Caribbean Fashion Show in Jamaica and a number of local festivals including but not limited to Holetown Festival and Bridgetown Market. These unique pieces have also won a number of awards including the National Industrial Award for Craft at NIFCA, the Crop Over Visual Arts Exhibition for Fine Craft and Best in show at Caribbean Gift and Craft Show.

This avid designer reveals that she is moving towards the niche market of creating high couture jewellery for fashion shows and unique pieces for the high-end market. Her unique pieces are placed in stores but if a customer demands it, she will tailor make a piece to suit the needs of that customer. She also intends “to strengthen the foundation of business for export. I would like to target Jamaica, Europe, Canada and the United States of America”.

Her advise to entrepreneurs in every field and to others who are looking to specialize in jewellery design, “Don’t give up, it is by faith that you overcome.”
